USDCHF Fundamental Analysis
Bloomberg—The Swiss franc strengthened to about 0.82 per US dollar, bouncing back from recent one-week lows. This rise was mainly due to a weaker dollar, which fell after disappointing US economic data increased expectations of upcoming interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve.
Earlier optimism in the markets over a US tariff ruling began to fade. Investors are now cautious, considering the chance that the Trump administration might pursue other legal methods to impose tariffs, adding uncertainty to the outlook.
In Switzerland, attention remains on the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and its future interest rate decisions. The SNB is widely expected to cut rates again on June 19, possibly lowering the benchmark rate to 0%. This would mark the sixth cut in a row, bringing rates down from 1.75% in March 2024 to just 0.25% today.
This ongoing easing is largely driven by low inflation. In April, headline consumer prices showed no increase compared to a year earlier, while core inflation—which excludes food and energy—fell to 0.6% from 0.9%. These figures signal that inflation is slowing down, raising concerns that the Swiss economy might slip into deflation.
Deflation can be harmful because it encourages consumers to delay spending, hoping for even lower prices. This can weaken overall demand and slow economic growth. As a result, the SNB may continue using interest rate cuts as a tool to support price stability and keep the economy on track.
